Route Choice on Transit Networks with Online Information at Stops

چکیده
Passengers on a transit network with common lines are often faced with the problem of choosing between either to board the arriving bus or to wait for a faster one. Many assignment models are based on the classical assumption that at a given stop passengers board the first arriving carrier of a certain subset of the available lines, often referred to as the attractive set. In this case, it has been shown that if the headway distributions are exponential then an optimal subset of lines minimizing the passenger travel time can be determined. However, when on-line information on future arrivals of buses are posted at the stop it is unlikely that the above classical assumption holds. Passengers may choose in this case to board a line that offers the best combination of displayed waiting time and expected travel time to destination once boarded. In this paper, we propose a general framework for determining the probability of boarding each line available at a stop when on-line information on bus waiting times is provided to passengers. We will also show that the classical model without on-line information may be interpreted as a particular instance of the proposed framework. The impact of the availability of information regarding bus arrivals and that of the regularity of transit lines on the network loads as well as on the passenger travel times will be illustrated with small numerical examples.

Bus Travel Time Prediction Model for Dynamic Operations Control and Passenger Information Systems
Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automatic Passengers Counters (APC) systems have been increasingly implemented by transit agencies for the real time monitoring of transit vehicles and automatic counting of passengers boarding and alighting at bus stops. As a result, a vast amount of potentially online data related to transit operation could be obtained from these systems. The emphasis of t...

Establishing a network of transit routes with satisfactory demand coverage is one of the main goals of transitagencies in moving towards a sustainable urban development. A primary concern in obtaining such anetwork is reducing operational costs. This paper deals with the problem of minimizing construction costsin a grid transportation network while satisfying a certain level o...
متن کاملA combined modal split and stochastic assignment model for congested networks with motorized and non-motorized transport modes
In this paper, a network equilibrium model is proposed for the simultaneous prediction of mode choice and route choice in congested networks with motorized and non-motorized transport modes. In Hong Kong, motorized and non-motorized modes are competing travel alternatives, as the average trip length is relatively short due to highdensity development in urban areas. In addition, non-motorized mo...
متن کاملRethinking the wait model at transit stops
In an urban transit system where the service is perceived in terms of frequency of the different lines, the mathematical description of the route choice strategy is not trivial, because the wait at the stop, as pointed out in many studies in the last 30 years, is a complex phenomenon which requires a specific analysis (e.g. Chriqui and Robillard [1975], Marguier [1981], Gendreau [1984], Spiess ...
متن کاملAccessibility tradeoffs in public transit planning
Spatial accessibility is a critical consideration in the provision of services, both public and private. In public transit planning, accessibility is comprised of access and geographic coverage. Interestingly, these two considerations are somewhat at odds with each other. Access is important because it is the process associated with getting to and departing from the service. Such access is typi...
